I just listened to another great sermon by Tim Keller, author of "The Prodigal God" which we will be studying in a few weeks.  Here is a quote that struck me like a ton of bricks this morning.

"You cant stay upset with someone unless you feel superior to them." Forgiveness is absorbing the debt (pain) against you instead of returning and inflicting it. That is the power of the gospel. Forgiveness towards others in Christ is saying I'm no better than you. -Tim Keller
