Iowa and Politics

One of the benefits of living in Iowa, like no other place I have ever lived, is being right at the heart of the political process.  It is starting to feel like the presidential candidates are residents around here.  So you can’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of this.  I have had the chance the past few weeks to attend a couple forums and meet and greets thanks to a few good friends (thanks Ricky D. and Brian N.).

One forum two weeks ago was held at Vermeer Manufacturing.

Tonight was the Thanksgiving Forum held in Des Moines.

Just a few thoughts about tonight.

1. Newt: If he would acknowledge his past marital mistakes more publically I think he would skyrocket forward in this campaign.  He is one of the best speakers and clearly very knowledgeable.  The moderator gave him a great chance to address the marital issue but he didn’t grab it.  He hinted at it, but missed a good chance tonight.

2. Santorum:  Wow.  We have a few good choices, but he delivered tonight. He is a man I feel like I can trust and respect. He’s got the integrity factor.

3. Bachmann:  Very well done as well.  The thing I love about her is that she is very direct, confident, and clearly a lady.  Some of my liberal female friends just don’t like her (a lot) because she doesn’t fit the strong woman mold.  She is a strong woman and clearly a woman, you have to love that.

4. Cain:  Weathering some storms yet, talks like a business man and I think that is why people like him.  At one point I felt like I was at a job orientation for Godfathers Pizza as he was listing off core values.  There is overlap regarding dignity for people in the business world and the govt. (and all areas for that matter) so it only makes sense, but I felt like I was to get to work right after that part.

5. Perry: Articulate and passionate but I'm still trying to figure him out.

6. Paul:  He is exciting and dangerous in my mind.  I love some of his ideas, and really don’t love some others.  He is so radical and clear that he is appealing so often and well unappealing other times.  How's that for clarity?

If you want to watch the forum in its entirety I have attached it below.  If you are curious about the candidates Christian convictions and how those convictions will affect their policy it is worth the watch.

Anyway, those are my quick thoughts from tonight. All in all I'm glad I went but I still have not made up my mind.

  1. Mark, check out this link. It's run by Uri Brito, a friend of mine and CREC pastor (that IS a dangerous combination . . . )I think it may be helpful to you.
